Day 8

YAY for 'liquid gold'

It was a good night in that sense.

BUT, when Ryan woke up, the mouth sores were MUCH worse then the previous day. It was so bad, he could feel sloughed off pieces of skin in his mouth. It hurt to drink and just swallowing his own saliva seemed to be a challenge. He then said,

"Wow, my mouth hurts so bad that I can't even talk normal... my voice is different."

He hit his PCA pump, rolled over and went right back to sleep.

The doctors finally woke him up at 8:30 when they came in for rounds this morning. They checked him out and noticed his mouth was worse, and saw some other areas that they needed to keep an eye on. With Ryan's WBC so low, still at .1, he poses a HUGE risk of infection and ANY open sore could cause major problems. To be on the safe side, they decided to do a CT scan of his abdomen, just to make sure he doesn't have any ulcer type sores in his intestines.

They also ordered another platelet transfusion to prevent any bleeding.

He was able to eat a little breakfast, shower and even walked 1 painful lap.

The rest of the day was spent sleeping and trying to produce that "liquid GOLD."

Just those darn ankles... they seem to like the chubby look.

Q: If Ryan has all these symptoms, is he doing okay with the transplant?

A: YUP, It is 100% normal. This was expected by the doctors and nurses. They said that although it STINKS, it is completely normal for all this to happen when the counts are this low. He is RIGHT on track and his body is dealing with things very well so far.

Q: Why do you pick the music you do for the blog?

A: It is Ryan's choice, he tries to use songs that deal with the post OR that hold significance. For example: "Yellow" by Coldplay is our song. On our first date, when Ryan came to pick me up, they were playing on Saturday Night Live (yes, we were going out at 11:30 at night). Instead of rushing out the door, we just stood there in the doorway, listening to a band that seemed pretty good, singing a song we kind of liked. It grew on us, as we grew closer together.
