Round II and mouth sores

MONDAY
During Ryan's appointment his labs came back showing that his WBC and hemoglobin weren't too bad, but his platelets were pretty low. The Nurse Practitioner examined his liver and spleen and felt the size was about the same. Once she looked inside his mouth, she realized the mucositis (mouth sores) were BAD! So, the Nurse Practitioner left to discuss with Dr. Persky what to do about treatment...
More chemo, or not?

Dr. Persky felt that for any other patient with that level of platelets and mouth sores, holding off chemo for a week would be the best option. However, he feels it is both necessary and crucial to be VERY aggressive during treatment and wanted to go ahead with the chemo. Unfortunately, Ryan's body has to pay the price for it.
He did tell Ryan that would probably mean lower counts and worse mouth sores. Ryan understood, and gave the "OK" to proceed...

Here he is getting fluids before his chemo
*
SINCE THEN...

The mouth sores are ALL over now: upper lip, lower lip, cheeks, under tongue and coating his entire throat.

So what does that mean?

Drinking hurts, eating is practically impossible and most things burn when it goes down.

*
Ryan's mom has been working like crazy to find things he wants to eat and that can go down easily. Last night she made a HIGH CAL broccoli soup that he was able to sip down. It took a good 40 minutes to drink about 1 c, but he did it! We were all SO very very excited!
*
He has an appointment tomorrow for a check up and labs

Keep FIGHTING Ry

My family keeps up on Ryans status faithfully. Right now my brother-in-law's neice, who is 3, is in phase 3 of cancer. She has a neuroblastoma...long story short, she's begun the hair loss, throwing up, won't eat and mouth sores. Jared is a dentist and said that there is something that is a combination of 3 things I believe that he perscribes to his patients for just this thing--mouth sores. If you're interested, I'll find out more info and maybe your dr's will perscribe some for Ryan. Cancer is a sad thing. If you want to read about little Gracie, you can go to my blog and then there's a link to hers. It's graciecare.blogspot.com. Ryan and she both were fasted for by us today :) Love you guys and keep faith. You're helping so many others that are going through this to keep their faith. The dad, Brandon who I went to college with, is struggling right now, wondering why a little 3yr old girl should have to suffer. You show us the importance of faith and hope. Thanks for all you do!!

Keep fighting my friends! I know that is easier said than done. I miss you guys and keep reminiscing and wishing we could rewind two years and all of us would be laughing together at the Dells. We had no idea of the crazy road that lie ahead back then. Life is hard, and sometimes the plan seems to make no sense, but there is a plan. "I know that He loveth His children; nevertheless, I do not know the meaning of all things." (1 Nephi 11:17) I still don't get this, and I guess I never will but I know God loves you. That is why I can go to Him in prayer and say, "I am frustrated and I don't get it, but I know that you've got Ryan, right?" And He assures me that He does. I hope you feel it. He is there, with all of you. That is all I know.

I have a green shake recipe we've used for cancer in our family. Here is the recipe if you want to give it a try;

1 scoop wheat grass powder
1/2 english cucumber
2 c. spinach
1/2 avocado (you could probably do more avo. for Ryan)
fresh mint leaves to taste
sweetner to taste (we like stevia and xylitol)
vanilla or coconut extract
ice

blend it all up. It tastes surprisingly good and the mint is soothing. You can also add Kale or any other greens for nutrition.

We are rooting for you here in Wyoming! Teddy (linford)

Break my heart!!! Poor Ryan! OUCH! I remember Casey having the same thing. It hurt him pretty bad as well. Bless Ryan's mom for making him some soup. Aren't mom's great..? Three cheers for Ryan for trying to eat. Keep it up Ryan!

I hope I can meet you here at Myrtle Beach. I'm reading you from here, and I am very fascinated by your strength. You just have to fight Ryan. Everything has a reason. Just think that you're in a hiatus now, and everything good will follow. Actually, everything is in good terms right now. One day, you can visit a good dentist. Myrtle Beach is waiting for you, yes, for you to have fun. You are an amazing man, and know you can surpass everything. Just fight, and think of Myrtle Beach. Dental and medical things, and all typical and normal days are waiting for you. Our place is a lovely one for you to continue fighting. Thanks again, Ryan.
